Beginner FAQ

Bitcoin questions, answered simply.

No jargon, no hype, no pressure. These are the questions people ask when they are trying to understand Bitcoin for the first time.

Getting Started

For the questions people ask before they touch anything.

Do I need to know anything about Bitcoin to start?+

No. Start with the basics: what Bitcoin is, why it exists, what sats are, and how wallets work. You do not need trading experience, coding knowledge, or a finance background.

Is it too late to get started?+

It is not too late to learn. Most people still do not understand Bitcoin, and learning does not require buying anything. Start by understanding the idea, then decide what makes sense for you.

Is this financial advice?+

No. This is education. The goal is to help you understand Bitcoin clearly so you can make your own decisions.

Is Bitcoin the same as crypto?+

Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency, but this site focuses on Bitcoin specifically. Many crypto projects are companies or tokens with different goals, tradeoffs, and risks.

Buying and Owning

Simple answers before your first sats.

Do I have to buy a whole Bitcoin?+

No. One Bitcoin is divisible into 100 million satoshis, or sats. You can own a small fraction of a Bitcoin, even just a few dollars worth.

Is Bitcoin too expensive for beginners?+

A whole Bitcoin can be expensive, but a whole Bitcoin is not the minimum. Beginners usually think in sats, start small if they buy at all, and focus on learning first.

Should I buy Bitcoin before I understand it?+

No. It is completely fine to learn first. If you do buy, start with an amount small enough that you can focus on the lesson instead of the price.

Can I leave Bitcoin on an exchange?+

You can, but then the exchange controls the keys. That may be convenient for a small beginner amount, but it is not the same as holding Bitcoin yourself.

Wallets and Self-Custody

The part that matters most once you own more than a tiny amount.

What is a Bitcoin wallet?+

A Bitcoin wallet is an app or device that manages your private keys and lets you receive, send, and back up your Bitcoin. The coins live on the Bitcoin network; the wallet controls access.

What is a recovery phrase?+

A recovery phrase is a list of 12 or 24 words that can restore your wallet. Anyone with those words can take your Bitcoin, so keep them offline and private.

What happens if I lose my recovery phrase?+

If you still have access to the wallet, move the Bitcoin to a new wallet with a new backup. If the wallet is gone and the recovery phrase is gone, the Bitcoin usually cannot be recovered. That is why the backup matters so much.

Should I take a photo of my recovery phrase?+

No. Photos often sync to cloud accounts, backups, and other devices. Write the words on paper or metal and store them somewhere physically safe.

Do I need a hardware wallet right away?+

Not for a tiny learning amount. Once the amount would hurt to lose, a hardware wallet is worth learning because it keeps your keys offline.

Safety and Trust

How to avoid the mistakes beginners worry about.

Is Bitcoin safe?+

The Bitcoin network itself has been running since 2009. The bigger beginner risks are scams, bad custody, lost backups, and sending to the wrong address.

Can a Bitcoin transaction be reversed?+

No. Once a Bitcoin transaction is confirmed, it cannot be reversed like a credit card chargeback. Always check the address and amount before sending.

How do I avoid Bitcoin scams?+

Ignore guaranteed returns, urgent messages, fake support accounts, cloud mining offers, and anyone asking for your recovery phrase. No real wallet or exchange support should ask for those words.

Do I need to understand mining and nodes first?+

No. You can learn in layers. Start with money, sats, wallets, and transactions. Mining and nodes make more sense after that foundation is in place.
